Our Mowing Service
Regular lawn maintenance is
the heart of the Nature-Scape program. Proper mowing practices are
essential for a beautiful lawn. We mow all turf with consideration for
the environment. All clippings are left, either discharged or mulched
into the lawn, which builds soil. Our lawns are beautifully striped as
they are cut (see link to sample photos of our properties
below). Grass is cut fairly short with the first cut of the year
to promote growth and root development; at 3½ - 4" during summer
to build a strong root system; and shorter in late fall to prepare turf
for winter. Our quotations for weekly maintenance include:
-
Trimming when necessary (normally this is done with each cutting).
-
Edging along sidewalks and driveways is performed with every other
cutting until late Fall.
-
Vegetation growing through sidewalks and driveway is cleared away.
-
Fall leaf mulching (see below) is included
with the price of weekly maintenance.
Mowing Guidelines
Spring Mowing
In early Spring, it is advisable to cut grass short -- this will help
to stimulate growth for a quicker green-up. As temperatures increase, the
lawn should be cut higher (in increments), until the lawn is being cut
at a minimum of 3" or more for warm Summer temperatures.
Summer Mowing
In Summer, grass should be cut at 3" or more. We mow at 3.5 - 4" during
mid-Summer.
Here's why turf should be cut at a high setting during Summer:
Roots of the lawn will be the same length as the grass blades above
ground (as long as the lawn is being watered properly); cutting high in
Summer will yield longer roots, therefore producing a stronger root system.
With the Summer heat, a stronger root system will lead to less stress for
the lawn -- which in turn leads to healthy turf. Grass cut high in Summer,
with a sharp blade, will be far less susceptible to weeds and disease.
Some people, often who have a weed-infested lawn, want it cut very short
-- thinking they can get rid of their weeds by cutting them down as short
as possible. They soon find out their problems become worse than ever.
Fall Mowing
In Winter, it is important that your lawn be fairly short (the shorter
the lawn is, the less nutrients it will consume over Winter, and the stronger
it will be next year). Therefore, the final cutting of the year is a bit shorter,
usually about 2.75". Also, at this time of year, we mulch the leaves at the same time we cut
the lawn. This helps the environment in many ways, and helps build soil.
